Amos
the prophet declared that “all the sinners” of Israel,
God's people, “shall die by the sword”, and even if they
say, “the evil shall not overtake nor prevent us”,
it would not defer the LORD's judgment. In addition, God declared he
would “raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen”,
and he would “close up the breaches thereof”, and in
chapter nine and verse twelve of his prophesy, Amos shared how the
LORD would make His people to “possess the remnant of Edom”
where we read:
That
they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen,
which
are called by my name, says the LORD that does this.
The
verse begins, “That they may possess the remnant of Edom,
and of all the heathen,...” Amos
began with the words, “that they may possess”
which means “seize, dispossess, take possession of, inherit,
occupy, impoverish or be an heir” “the remnant”
or “the rest, residue, remainder, descendants or what is left”
“of Edom” which
means “red” and were the “descendants of Esau”, “and
of all the heathen” which
refers to “the people or nations that were usually Gentile
nations”.
The
verse goes on to say, “...which
are called by my name, says the LORD that does this.” Amos
continued, “which are called”
or “recited, read, proclaimed, cried and utter with a loud sound”
“by my name” which
means “reputation, fame and glory”, “says” or
“utters, declares and proclaims” “the LORD”
which refers to “Yehovah or Jehovah who is the existing or becoming
One and the proper name for the one true God” “that
does this” or “who fashions,
accomplishes and makes this to occur”. It was “the
LORD” who would affect these
events with Israel.
When
we think through these words of Amos, we begin to see how God will
restore to Israel that which the enemy nations took away. “Edom's
remnant” was to be “possessed”
by Israel, and though they would face judgment themselves, the LORD
would eventually allow Israel to be over their enemies. God sent
Jesus Christ into a world of people who needed saving, and though
they may go through judgment, they shall be saved when they repent
and turn their lives over to Him.
Next
time Amos shares about “the
Plowman, the Treader, the Mountains and the Hills”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
