Thus far in the book of
Hebrews we have learned how Jesus is superior to “the prophets”
in “times past” and “the angels” whom God
created. Jesus is the “only begotten” Son of God, and none
of “the angels” were given that position. In chapter one
and verse six of Hebrews, we see how Jesus was “the
first-begotten into the world” where we read:
And again, when he
brings in the first-begotten into the world,
he says, And let all
the angels of God worship him.
The verse begins, “And again, when he brings in the
first-begotten into the world,...” The writer began with the
words, “And again” which means “also,
even, then, likewise and indeed further, in renewal, repetition, anew
and moreover”, “when he brings in” or “at the
time God leads and puts into place that which is not being expressly
stated” “the first-begotten” which means “the first in
line of all born in creation” “into the world” or
“within the inhabited earth and universe”. The author referred to
the time God brought Jesus into the world.
The verse goes on to say, “...he says, And let all the
angels of God worship him.” The writer continued, “he
says” or “God affirms, exhorts, maintains, commands, directs,
intends and calls”, “And let all” or “allow and demand
each, every, any, all, the whole and everyone” “the angels”
which refers to “the envoys, ones
who are sent and messengers from God” “of God” who
is “the Godhead bodily which is comprised of God the Father, Christ
the Son and the Holy Spirit” “worship him” which
literally means “to kiss the hand of one in a token of reverence”
or to “fall upon the knees and touch the ground with the forehead
as an expression of profound reverence”. When Jesus was born, “the
angels” worshiped Him at God's command.
When
we meditate upon these words in Hebrews, we might remember the time
when the angel appeared unto the shepherds who were taking care of
their sheep - “And
there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field,
keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the
Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about
them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear
not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall
be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David
a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be
a sign unto you; You shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling
clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a
multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God
in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” (Luke
2:8-14) The angels of God worshiped Jesus just as the writer of
Hebrews declared, and since this is true, shouldn't we follow their
lead and worship Jesus who is the “only begotten”
Son of God?
Next
time we see
the writer share how Jesus “makes
his angels spirits”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
