As we continue to study the
book of Hebrews, we are learning about the superiority of Jesus
Christ to the “prophets” and “angels”. Jesus
was the “first-begotten” Son of God, and “the angels”
“worshiped” Him when He came to the earth. No other person
or entity receive that adoration, and in chapter one and verse seven
of this book, the Hebrew writer shares concerning “angels
spirits, and his ministers of a flame of fire” where we read:
And of the angels he
says, Who makes his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of
fire.
The
verse begins, “And of the angels he says, Who makes his
angels spirits, ...” The
writer began with the words, “And of the angels”
or “truly, certainly and indeed of the envoys, ones who are sent
and messengers from God” “he says”
which means “speaks, affirms, maintains, advises and directs”,
“Who makes” or “the One
who produces, constructs, forms and fashions” “his
angels” which refers to “the
envoys, ones who are sent and messengers from God” “spirits”
or “winds, simple essence, devoid of all or at least all
grosser matter, and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring,
deciding, and acting ”. God
commands “the angels”
at His pleasure like His does the wind and lightning.
The
verse goes on to say, “...and his ministers a flame of
fire.” The writer continued, “and his ministers” or
“public servants, laborers and benefactors” “a flame”
which means “a blaze” “of fire” or “fiery
lightning”. These “angels” were to perform at God's
command, and like “blazing lightning or fire”, they were to be
swift and intense with zeal-filled obedience.
When we
consider these words in Hebrews, we see how God commissioned His
“angels” to be swift and intense messengers who serve at His
beckoning call. Jesus, being more powerful and prominent than any of
the angels, would exercise dominion over them, and they were to be at
His service. As we recognize this obedience within “the angels”,
we should consider how much more we must comply with His commands. We
do have a choice, and we may comply with Him and be used in His
kingdom like the angels, or oppose Him and find ourselves in direct
confrontation with Him.
Next
time we see
the writer share how God said of His Son, “Your
throne, O God, is
for ever and ever”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
