The
Hebrew writer shared how there is not “any creature that
is not manifest in” God's
“sight”, and that
everything is “naked and opened unto the eyes of him with
whom we have to do”,
and in chapter four and verse fourteen of Hebrews, we see how
“Jesus” is “our
great high priest” where we read:
Seeing
then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the
heavens,
The
verse begins, “Seeing then that we have a great
high priest, that is passed into the heavens,...” The
writer began with the words, “Seeing then”
which means “having, owning and possessing therefore, certainly,
truly, surely and accordingly” “that we have”
or “we now verily possess and have obtained” “a great
high priest” which refers to
“splendid, grand and stately chief priest who holds the highest
office”, “that is passed into”
or “gone through, walked, traveled and spread into” “the
heavens” which refers to “the
region above the sidereal heavens and the seat of order of things
eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly
beings”. The writer noted that we have a “great high
priest” who has entered into
“heaven” on our
behalf.
The
verse goes on to say, “ …Jesus the
Son of God, let us hold fast our
profession.” The
writer continued, “Jesus”
whose name means “Jehovah is Salvation” and was “the Son of
God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate”
“the Son” or
“the kinship and posterity” “of
God” which
refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God
the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”, “let
us hold fast”
or “to seize and be master, chief an ruler of” “our
profession”
which means “what we confess or profess to be”. Since “Jesus”
who is “the Son of God”
is our “great high priest”,
we are to “cling to and seize” the confession of our faith and
trust in Him.
When
we meditate upon these words in Hebrews, we understand how important
it is to realize who Jesus is. The “high priest” entered the
“Holy of Holies” one time per year to atone for the sins of
Israel, and Jesus entered into the “heavens” one time that
He might atone for our sins as well. Because He did, we are now able
to cling to our “confession” of faith in Him, and we may
know that His plan of Salvation is effective for all who put their
faith and trust in Him. Oh might we know today the wonderful “high
priest” that God has given to us, and should there be one
reading these words who has not surrendered their live to Him, let
them do so today while there remains opportunity to do so.
Next
time we see
the writer share how Jesus was “tempted
like as we are, yet without sin”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
