The
Hebrew writer declared, “unto us was the gospel preached,
as well as unto” the children
of Israel, and because they did not believe God's “gospel”,
it was “unprofitable”
to them. However, God “swore in”
His “wrath”,
“we which have believed do enter into rest”,
and in chapter four and verse four of Hebrews we see the writer's
reference to “when” God
di “rest the seventh day from all his works” where
we read:
And God
did rest the seventh day from all his works.
The
verse begins, “For he spoke in a
certain place of the seventh day
on this wise,...” The
writer began with the words, “For he
spoke”
which means “because, even, indeed, no doubt, seeing then and
therefore he uttered, shared, told and proclaimed” “in
a certain place”
which means “somewhere about” “of
the seventh”
or “the number seven” “day on
this wise” which
means “thus, even so, likewise and after this manner”. Moses
wrote concerning the “seventh day”
when God
created everything.
The
verse goes on to say, “ ...And God did rest the seventh
day from all his works.” The
writer continued, “And God”
which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised
of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”, “did
rest” or “was made quiet,
still and desisted” “the seventh day”
which refers to “day number seven” “from all his
works” or “from each, every,
the whole of God's business, employment, occupation, enterprise,
deeds and acts”. On the “seventh day”,
God “rested” from
creating.
When
we think through these words in Hebrews, we see how the writer noted
the way God Himself “rested”
from creating on the “seventh day” -
“And on the seventh day God ended his work which
he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which
he had made.” (Genesis 2:2) This further demonstrates God's
resolve to provide “rest” to people everywhere. He sent
Jesus Christ to bring eternal “rest” for all who will put
their faith and trust in Him. Perhaps there are those reading these
words who need some “rest”. If so, look to Jesus, because
He became the “rest” that God intended for everyone.
Next
time the Hebrew writer declares the condition again,
“if they shall enter into my
rest”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
