Mark wrote how Jesus said, “there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power”. Mark continued, “after six days Jesus took with him Peter, and James, and John, and lead them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them. And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them”, and in chapter nine and verse four of his book, Mark shared how, “there appeared unto them Elias with Moses” where we read:
And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.
The verse reads, “And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses:” Mark began with the words, “and there appeared” which means “showed themselves” “unto them” or “to Jesus, Peter, James and John” “Elias” which refers to “Elijah whose name means my God is Jehovah and was a prophet born at Thisbe, the unflinching champion of the theocracy in the reigns of the idolatrous kings Ahab and Ahaziah” “with Moses” which means “accompanied by Moses whose name means drawing out and was the legislator of the Jewish people and in a certain sense the founder of the Jewish religion”. Mark shared how “Elijah and Moses” showed themselves to Jesus and His disciples.
The verse continues, “and they were talking with Jesus.” Mark added the words, “and they were talking” which means “and Elijah and Moses were speaking to, conversing and communing” “with Jesus” or “with the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation”. Mark shared how “Elijah and Moses” were conversing with Jesus.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we can imagine what a sight this must have been to have “Elijah and Moses” “appear” in front of Jesus and His disciples, and when “Elijah and Moses” began to speak to Jesus, Peter, James and John must have been listening carefully. All these things were according to God's plan of “salvation” for mankind, and when “Elijah” who represented the “prophets” and “Moses” who represented the “law” were there, Jesus' conversation was special and complete. God loves people, and His desire is to “save” every one of them when they “believe and trust” in Jesus. Those who are wise will yield their lives to Him.
Next time Mark shares how Peter said, “Master, it is good for us to be here”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
