An Overshadowing Cloud and a Voice - Mark 9:7

Mark wrote how Jesus said, “there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power”. Mark continued by writing, “after six days Jesus took with him Peter, and James, and John, and lead them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them. And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them. And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. For he did not know what to say; for they were sore afraid”, and in chapter nine and verse seven of his book, Mark shared how, “there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud” where we read:

And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying,

This is my beloved Son: hear him.

The verse reads,And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, ...Mark began with the words, “and there was a cloud” which means “and there appeared a cloud in the sky” “that overshadowed them” or “that threw a shadow upon and enveloped Peter, James and John”: “and a voice” which means “and a sound or tone of uttered words” “came out of the cloud” or “proceeded and arose from the cloud in the sky”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”. Mark shared how a “cloud” in the sky appeared that enveloped Peter, James and John, and out of the cloud a “voice” proclaimed the following.

The verse goes on to say, This is my beloved Son: hear him. Mark continued with the words, “this is my beloved Son” which means “Jesus exists as God's esteemed, dear, favorite and worthy of love Son”: “hear him” or “be endowed with the faculty of hearing, not deaf, attend to and consider what Jesus has said”. Mark shared how the “voice” within the “cloud” proclaimed Jesus to be God's “beloved” Son and instructed Peter, James and John to “hearken and attend to” what He has said.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how God the Father involved Himself in this “mount of transfiguration” experience. Suddenly a “cloud” covered Jesus, Peter, James and John and a “voice” came out of it declaring that Jesus was “God's Son” and His disciples should “listen to” Him. It's as if God interrupted Peter's words to have him and the other disciples know who Jesus is and instructed them to listen to Him. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when God makes this kind of declaration, all who read these words should hearken and believe.

Next time Mark shares, “when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
