Who Do You Say I Am? - Mark 8:29

Mark wrote how Jesus “went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am? And they answered, John the Baptist: but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets”, and in chapter eight and verse twenty-nine of his book, Mark shared how Jesus asked His disciples, “whom say you that I am?” where we read:

And he said unto them, But whom say you that I am?

And Peter answered and said unto him, Thou art the Christ.

The verse reads,And he said unto them, But whom say you that I am?Mark began with the words, “and he said” which means “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” or “to His disciples”, “but whom say you” which means “nevertheless, moreover and who is the person that that Jesus' disciples utter, declare and proclaim” “that I am” or “that Jesus exists as”? Mark shared how Jesus asked His disciples who they “declare” that He is.

The verse goes on to say, And Peter answered and said unto him, You are the Christ. Mark continued with the words, “and Peter answered” which means “and Peter whose name means little rock or stone responded, answered and began to speak” “and said” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto him” which means “to Jesus”, “You are the Christ” or “Jesus you exists as the Messiah and the Son of God”. Mark shared how Jesus' disciple “Peter” spoke up and declared that Jesus is “God's Son” and “the Messiah Savior” of all the world.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus presented His question as to who He is to His disciples. “Peter”, who was known to speak out, declared Jesus to be the “Messiah, Christ and Son of God”. Jesus did not refute Peter's statement because it is certain and true. Jesus came into the world because of God's love for people, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16). God wants every person to live with Him forever, and He sent His Son Jesus as the “Messiah and Christ” of the world. Those who put their “faith and trust” in Him shall never die “spiritually”, and they shall live with God forever.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus told His disciples, “they should tell no man of him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
