Mark wrote when Jesus, “had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?, and in chapter eight and verse thirty-eight of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “whosoever there shall be ashamed of me and of my words … of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed” where we read:
Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
The verse reads, “Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation;” Mark began with the words, “whosoever therefore” which means “whatever person whether male or female then, wherefore and these things begin so” “shall be ashamed of me” or “will feel shame and dishonor because of Jesus” “and of my words” which means “and of Jesus' speech, utterances, sayings, decrees, mandates and orders” “in this adulterous” or “within the faithless to God, unclean and apostate” “and sinful” which means “and not free from sin, devoted to sin, pre-eminently and especially wicked and heathen” “generation” or “an age, time, nation or group of people who are very like each other in endowments, pursuits and character”. Mark shared how Jesus referred to people who are “ashamed” of Him and His words within the “faithless and wicked” generation in which they live.
The verse continues, “of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” Mark added the words, “of him also” which means “of the person who is ashamed of Jesus and His words” “shall the Son of man” or “will the Son of God who is Jesus” “be ashamed” which means “have shame and dishonor toward”, “when” or “at the time and moment” “he comes” which means “the Son of Man Jesus appears and arrives” “in the glory” or “within the honor, praise and dignity” “of his Father” which refers to “belonging to Jesus Heavenly Father” “with the holy angels” or “along with the most holy, sacred, pure, morally blameless and ceremonially consecrated messengers and envoys”. Mark shared how Jesus said He would also “shame and dishonor” those who were “ashamed” of Him and His words when He comes with all the “glory and honor” of God the Father.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus gave a grave warning to anyone who is “ashamed” of Him and what He has to say. Rather than submitting to Jesus and His doctrine, these people will have rejected Him and refused to hear His words. Jesus is coming again, (“In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” See John 14:3) and when He arrives in the “glory of God the Father”, everyone will give an account of what they did with Him and His words. Let all who read these words take heed and yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time we begin a new chapter and see Mark share how Jesus says, “there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
