Luke the beloved physician wrote how, “Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him. But Jesus said unto him, Judas, are you betraying the Son of man with a kiss When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword? And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And Jesus answered and said, Suffer you thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him. Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Are you come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves?”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse fifty-three of his book Luke shared how Jesus said to the religious leaders, “when I was daily with you in the temple, you stretched forth no hands against me” where we read:
When I was daily with you in the temple, you stretched forth no hands against me:
but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.
The verse reads, “When I was daily with you in the temple, you stretched forth no hands against me:” Luke began with the words, “when I was daily with you” or “at the time and moment I, Jesus, was day by day alongside you, religious leaders” “in the temple” which means “within the sacred worship place located in Jerusalem”, “you stretched forth no hands” or “you, religious leaders, did not extend physical hands” “against me” which means “in opposition to and in position across from Jesus”. Luke shared how Jesus reminded the “religious leaders” that He was with them “day by day” within the “sacred worship” place in Jerusalem, and they at no time “extended” their “physical hands” in opposition to Him.
The verse continues, “but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.” Luke added the words, “but this is your hour” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding the time at hand is the specific time designated for the religious leaders”, “and the power” which means “and the authority, strength and ability” “of darkness” or “and belonging to shadiness, obscurity and blindness”. Luke shared how Jesus told the “religious leaders” this was the “time” designated to them and the “authority” of “obscurity and blindness” or evil.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus indited the “religious leaders” for not accosting Him while He was with them “day by day” in the “sacred worship” place, and He resigned Himself to the idea of this being their “moment in time” as well as the “authority” of the “darkness”. Jesus knew what lie before Him, and though He could have stopped this process at any time, He relinquished His power to the “religious leaders” and the “power of darkness”. God's desire is to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they consider to what great lengths He went to be their “Lord and Savior”, they should yield their lives to Him and receive His forgiveness for sins.
Next time Luke shares how the religious leaders “took” Jesus, “and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
