Luke the beloved physician wrote how, “Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him. But Jesus said unto him, Judas, are you betraying the Son of man with a kiss When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword? And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse fifty-one of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “touched his ear, and healed him” where we read:
And Jesus answered and said, Suffer you thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.
The verse reads, “And Jesus answered and said, Suffer you thus far.” Luke began with the words, “and Jesus answered” or “and the Son of God, the Savior of the world and God incarnate responded and began to speak” “and said” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “Suffer you thus far” or “you, disciple of Jesus, allow, permit and let them alone in doing this, and stop striking with the sword”. Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples to “allow” what was happening to Him and not to fight against it.
The verse continues, “And he touched his ear, and healed him.” Luke added the words, “and he touched his ear” which means “and Jesus attached, clung to and adhered to the servant's physical ear”, “and healed him” which means “and cured and made the servant whole”. Luke shared how Jesus “touched” the servant's “ear” and “made him whole”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus responded to His disciple cutting off the ear of the “high priest's servant”. Rather than encouraging fighting, Jesus stopped the activity of His disciple, Peter, by telling him to allow this. Then, as He continued to care for people even when they were attempting to arrest Him, Jesus “touched” the “servant's ear” and “cured” him. This demonstrated the purpose of Jesus coming to the earth. Mankind needed to be “cured” from their “sins”, and Jesus willingly committed Himself to help them by suffering death in their place. Jesus came to “heal, cure and make whole” all who submit themselves to Him as their “Lord and Savior”, and when they yield to Him, He will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life. This is Jesus' ultimate “touch”, and all who will may be “made whole”.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says to the religious leaders, “are you come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
