In the book of Joshua, we learned, “This then was the lot of the tribe of the children of Judah by their families” which included how, “the border went up to Bethhogla, and passed along by the north of Betharabah; and the border went up to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben: And the border went up toward Debir from the valley of Achor, and so northward, looking toward Gilgal, that is before the going up to Adummim, which is on the south side of the river: and the border passed toward the waters of Enshemesh, and the goings out thereof were at Enrogel”, and in chapter fifteen and verse eight of Joshua we learn how, “the border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom unto the south side of the Jebusite” where we read,
And the border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom unto the south side of the Jebusite; the same is Jerusalem: and the border went up to the top of the mountain that lies before the valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the valley of the giants northward:
The verse reads, “And the border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom unto the south side of the Jebusite; the same is Jerusalem:” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and the border” which means “and the edge, circuit and boundary” “went up by the valley” or “rose and ascended beside the vale, lowland and narrow gorge” “of the son of Hinnom” which means “pertaining to the male offspring and progeny belonging to Hinnom whose name means ‘lamentation’ and was a valley (deep and narrow ravine) with steep, rocky sides located southwest of Jerusalem, separating Mount Zion to the north from the hill of evil counsel' and the sloping rocky plateau of the 'plain of Rephaim' to the south” “unto the south side” or “to the side in the southern direction” “of the Jebusite” which means “belonging to the Jebusite who was the descendant of Jebus whose name means ‘trodden place’”: “the same is Jerusalem” or “the selfsame one exists as Jerusalem whose name means ‘teaching of peace’ and is “the chief city of Palestine and capital of the united kingdom and the nation of Judah after the split”. Joshua or the writer shared how the boundary of the property given to the “tribe of Judah” ascended from the lowland area belonging to the male offspring of “Hinnom” to the side in the southern direction of the “Jebusite” which was later called “Jerusalem”.
The verse goes on to say, “and the border went up to the top of the mountain that lies before the valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the valley of the giants northward:” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “and the border” which means “and the edge, circuit and boundary” “went up to the top of the mountain” or “rose and ascended to the summit, upper part, chief and tip top of the rising above the plain” “that lies before the valley of Hinnom westward” which means “that rests in front and in the presence of the lowland belonging to Hinnom in the western direction”, “which is at the end of the valley” or “that exists at the extremity belonging to the vale, lowland and narrow gorge” “of the giants northward” which means “belonging to the huge sized men in the northern direction”. Joshua or the writer said the boundary of the land given to the “tribe of Judah” ascended to the summit of the risings above the plain that rest in front of the lowland of “Hinnom” in a western direction that is located at the extremity belonging to the northern lowland or vale where huge sized men dwelled.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn about more of the boundaries of the land that was provided to the “tribe of Judah”. Again, these name may be unfamiliar to us, but they were not to Joshua and the people of Israel. “The valley of the son of Hinnom, the south side of the Jebusite or Jerusalem and the top of the mountain that rested in from of the vale belonging to Hinnom in a western direction and at the northern extremity of the vale where the huge sized men lived” were all part of the boundary lines where the people of “Judah” would live. God knows where we live as well, and regardless of where that is, He desires to have a personal intimate relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of everyone and was resurrected from the grave after three days. When we surrender to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive or sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and to empower us to live in a manner that is pleasing to Him wherever we make our home.
Next time Joshua or the writer says, “the border was drawn from the top of the hill unto the fountain of the water of Nephtoah”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
