In the book of Joshua, we learned, “This then was the lot of the tribe of the children of Judah by their families” which included how, “the border went up to Bethhogla, and passed along by the north of Betharabah; and the border went up to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben:”, and in chapter fifteen and verse seven of Joshua we learn how, “the border went up toward Debir from the valley of Achor” where we read,
And the border went up toward Debir from the valley of Achor, and so northward, looking toward Gilgal, that is before the going up to Adummim, which is on the south side of the river: and the border passed toward the waters of Enshemesh, and the goings out thereof were at Enrogel:
The verse reads, “And the border went up toward Debir from the valley of Achor, and so northward, looking toward Gilgal, that is before the going up to Adummim, which is on the south side of the river:” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and the border” which means “and the boundary, circuit and edge” “went up toward Debir” or “rose and ascended to Debir whose name means ‘sanctuary’ and was a town in the mountains of Judah west of Hebron which was given to the priests and became a city of refuge” “from the valley of Achor” which means “separate and apart from the vale, lowland and open country belonging to Achor whose name means ‘trouble or disturbance’ and was where Achan and his family were stoned”, “and so northward” or “and therefore and then in a northern direction”, “looking toward Gilgal” which means “turning to, approaching and regarding to Gilgal whose name means ‘a wheel or rolling’ and was “the first site of an Israelite camp west of the Jordan, east of Jericho, here Samuel was judge, and Saul was made king; later used for illicit worship”, “that is before the going up” or “that exists in front and in the presence of the incline or ascent” “to Adummin” whose name means “ruddy one; quieted ones” and was “a pass or ridge of hills which were west of Gilgal”, “which is on the south side of the river” or “that exists upon the side of the flowing waters in a southern direction”. Joshua or the writer shared how the next boundary of the land given to the “tribe of Judah” ascended to “Debir”, apart from the lowland area belonging to “Achor” in a northern direction to “Gilgal” that existed in front of the ascension to “Adummim”which was located upon the southern side of the flowing waters.
The verse goes on to say, “and the border passed toward the waters of Enshemesh, and the goings out thereof were at Enrogel:” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “and the border” which means “and the edge, circuit and boundary” “passed toward the waters” or “traversed and swept to the flowing waters” “of Enshemesh” which means “belonging to Enshemesh whose name means ‘fountain of the sun’ and was a spring on the boundary of Judah on the south and Benjamin on the north”, “and the goings out thereof” or “and the extremity, end and source of the border that passed toward the waters of Enshemesh” “were at Enrogel” which means “existed in the location of Enrogel whose name means ‘fount of the fuller’ and was a place near Jerusalem on the border between Judah and Benjamin and from which the permanent source of the pool of Siloam comes”. Joshua or the writer shared how the boundary belonging to the property allotted to the “tribe of Judah” also swept toward the flowing waters belonging to “Enshemesh”, and the extremities from “Enshemesh” were in the location of “Enrogel”.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see the names of more of the places which were familiar to the people of Israel that are unfamiliar to us, but they became the boundaries for the land given to the “tribe of Judah”. “Debir, the valley of Achor, Gilgal, Adummim, the south side of the river, the waters of Enshemesh and it flowing to the location of Enrogel” were all boundary points for the “tribe of Judah’s” inheritance from God. Jehovah God loves people, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with all of us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. When we yield to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and to empower us to live according to that truth in keeping with wherever He decides we should be in the world.
Next time Joshua or the writer says, “the border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom unto the south side of the Jebusite”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
