The Salt Sea to the End of Jordan - Joshua 15:5

In the book of Joshua, we learned, “This then was the lot of the tribe of the children of Judah by their families; even to the border of Edom the wilderness of Zin southward was the uttermost part of the south coast. And their south border was from the shore of the salt sea, from the bay that looks southward. And it went out to the south side to Maalehacrabbim, and passed along to Zin, and ascended up on the south side unto Kadeshbarnea, and passed along to Hezron, and went up to Adar, and fetched a compass to Karkaa. From there it passed toward Azmon, and went out unto the river of Egypt; and the goings out of that coast were at the sea: this shall be your south coast”, and in chapter fifteen and verse five of Joshua we learn how, “the east border was the salt sea, even unto the end of Jordan” where we read,

And the east border was the salt sea, even unto the end of Jordan.

And their border in the north quarter was from the bay of the sea at the uttermost part of Jordan:

The verse reads, “And the east border was the salt sea, even unto the end of Jordan.” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and the east border” which means “and the boundary, circuit and edge in the eastern direction” “was the salt sea” or “existed as the large body of water that was filled with salt (the Dead Sea)”, “even unto the end” which means “indeed to the extremity, border and outskirt” “of Jordan” or “belonging to Jordan whose name means ‘descender’ and was the river of Palestine running from the roots of Anti-Lebanon to the Dead Sea a distance of approximately 200 miles (320 km)”. Joshua or the writer shared how the eastern edge of “Judah’s” border existed as the large body of water filled with salt (the Dead Sea) to the extremity of the “Jordan River”.

The verse goes on to say, “And their border in the north quarter was from the bay of the sea at the uttermost part of Jordan:” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “and their border” which means “and their, the tribe of Judah’s, edge, circuit and boundary” “in the north quarter” or “within the northeastern direction” “was from the bay of the sea” which means “existed separate and apart from tongue shaped wedge the belonging to the large body of water” “at the uttermost part of Jordan” or “at the end, outskirt or extremity belonging to Jordan whose name means ‘descender’ and was the river of Palestine running from the roots of Anti-Lebanon to the Dead Sea a distance of approximately 200 miles (320 km)”. Joshua or the writer shared how the boundary at the northeast corner of the land given to the “tribe of Judah” existed as separated from the tongue shaped wedge of the large body of water to the extremity belonging to the “Jordan” River.

When we think through the words in this verse, we discover more of the boundary of the property that was given to the “tribe of Judah”. The eastern edge of the land was the large body of water filled with salt, the Dead Sea, unto the extremity of the Jordan River, and the northeastern corner existed from the tongue shaped wedge of the large body of water which was at the extremity of the “Jordan River”. In other words, where the “bay” emptied into the Jordan river was the northeastern corner of the boundary. God decided where the “tribe of Judah” would live, and when Joshua distributed the land to them, the people of Judah would build their lives there. God knows where He desires for us to live as well, and while we live on the earth, His desire is to have a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and equip us with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and empower us to live according to that truth so we live in a pleasing manner to Him wherever He places us in the world.

Next time Joshua or the writer says, “the border went up to Bethhogla, and passed along by the north of Betharabah”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
