The King of Eglon and Gezer - Joshua 12:12

In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land on the other western side of Jordan” which included, “the kings of Jericho, Ai, which is beside Bethel, Jarmuth, and Lachish”, and in chapter twelve and verse twelve of Joshua we discover how “Israel” conquered, “the king of Eglon, one; the king of Gezer” where we read,

The king of Eglon, one; the king of Gezer, one;

The verse reads, “The king of Eglon, one;” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “the king” which means “the royal ruler and leader” “of Eglon” or “belonging to Eglon whose name means ‘calf-like’ and was a royal city in Canaan that opposed the conquest; located in the low lands of Judah”, “one” which means “a single royal ruler and leader”. Joshua or the writer shared how the royal leader belonging to “Eglon” and his region were also conquered by “Joshua” and the army of “Israel”

The verse goes on to say, “the king of Gezer, one;” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “the king” which means “the royal ruler and leader” “of Gezer” or “belonging to Gezer whose name means ‘porter’ and was a Levitical city on the border of Ephraim”, “one” which means “a single royal ruler and leader”. Joshua or the writer referred to how “Gezer’s” royal ruler and region were also overtaken by “Israel”

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn the names of two more royal rulers and their territories that were conquered by “Joshua” and the people of “Israel”. “Eglon and Gezer” were among the leaders Jehovah God removed and replaced with His people “Israel”. Incrementally God was giving the promise land to the people of “Israel”, and as these leaders were destroyed, different tribes of “Israel” would occupy their space. God provided for and protected “Israel”, and He will do the same for everyone who yields to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was resurrected from the grave after three days. When we submit to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and bestow His Holy Spirit upon us so we are guided into all truth and prepared to receive that which He chooses according to His perfect plan and will.

Next time we see how “Israel” conquered, “the king of Debir” and “the king of Geder”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
