In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “This then was the lot of the tribe of the children of Judah by their families; even to the border of Edom the wilderness of Zin southward was the uttermost part of the south coast. And their south border was from the shore of the salt sea, from the bay that looks southward. And it went out to the south side to Maalehacrabbim, and passed along to Zin, and ascended up on the south side unto Kadeshbarnea, and passed along to Hezron, and went up to Adar, and fetched a compass to Karkaa. From there it passed toward Azmon, and went out unto the river of Egypt; and the goings out of that coast were at the sea: this shall be your south coast. And the east border was the salt sea, even unto the end of Jordan. And their border in the north quarter was from the bay of the sea at the uttermost part of Jordan”, and in chapter fifteen and verse six of Joshua we learn how, “the border went up to Bethhogla, and passed along by the north of Betharabah” where we read,
And the border went up to Bethhogla, and passed along by the north of Betharabah;
and the border went up to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben:
The verse reads, “And the border went up to Bethhogla, and passed along by the north of Betharabah;” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and the border” which means “and the edge, circuit and boundary” “went up to Bethhogla” or “rose and ascended to Bethhogla whose name means ‘house of the partridge or place of partridge’ and was a place in Benjamin on the border with Judah”, “and passed along by the north” which means “and crossed, marched over and traversed and through the northern direction” “of Betharabah” or “belonging to Betharabah whose name means ‘house of the desert valley or place of the depression’ and was a place in Judah or Benjamin, site unknown”. Joshua or the writer continued to share about the boundary of the property given to the “tribe of Judah” which arose to “Bethhogla” and traversed alongside the northern direction belonging to “Betharabah”.
The verse continues, “and the border went up to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben:” Joshua or the writer added the words, “and the border” which means “and the boundary, circuit and edge” “went up to the stone of Rohan” or “arose and ascended to the hewn rock belonging to Bohan whose name means ‘thumb’ and was a Reubenite who set a boundary stone between Judah and Benjamin” “the son of Reuben” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Reuben whose name means ‘behold a son’ and was the eldest son of Jacob by Leah”. Joshua or the writer shared how another boundary of the land given to the “tribe of Judah” ascended to the hewn rock belonging to “Bohan” who was the male offspring belonging to “Reuben”.
When we considered the words in this verse, we discover more of the boundaries of the property allotted to the “tribe of Judah”. These edges arose from “Bethhogla”, traversed toward the northern area of “Betharabah” and arose to the hewn stone which belonged to “Bohan” who was “Reuben’s” male offspring. The names of these places and borders may be unfamiliar to us, but they were not to God and the “tribes of Israel”. God told “Joshua” and the people of Israel that they would inherit the promise land, and the “tribe of Judah” was being given their allotment. God knows our locations as well, and regardless of where we are in the world, He desires to have a personal intimate relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. When we yield to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and empower us to live, wherever we are, in a manner that is pleasing to Him. (See John 3:16: 16:13; Acts 1:8; Revelation 4:11)
Next time Joshua or the writer says, “the border went up toward Debir from the valley of Achor”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
