Hebron, the Inheritance of Caleb - Joshua 14:14

In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance”, and in chapter fourteen and verse fourteen of Joshua we learn how, “Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh” where we read,

Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed the LORD God of Israel.

The verse reads, “Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “Hebron therefore” which means “Hebron, whose name means ‘association’ and was “a city in south Judah approximately twenty miles south of Jerusalem and approximately twenty miles (30 km) north of Beersheba and near where Abraham built an altar, then, wherefore and on this account” “became the inheritance of Caleb” or “came about, existed as and fell out to be the possession, property, heritage, share and portion belonging to Caleb whose name means ‘dog’ and was the godly son of Jephunneh and the faithful spy who reported the Promised Land favorably and urged its capture” “the son of Jephunneh” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Jephunneh whose name means ‘he will be facing’ and was the father of Caleb the spy from the tribe of Judah” “the Kenezite” whose name means “hunter” and “were the descendants of Kenaz” “unto this day” which means “to the current sunrise to sunset or the present time”. Joshua or the writer said “Hebron” came about to be the heritage and allotment of land given to “Caleb” who was the male offspring of “Jephunneh the Kenesite”

The verse goes on to say, “… because that he wholly followed the LORD God of Israel.” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “because that he wholly followed” which means “since and on account that he, Caleb, completely and fully came behind and walked after” “the LORD God” or “Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name of the One True God” “of Israel” which means “belonging to Israel whose name means ‘God prevails” and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob”. Joshua or the writer said the reason “Caleb” inherited “Hebron” was because he completely and fully walked after Jehovah God.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how “Caleb” received his mountain, “Hebron”, on account that he completely walked after Jehovah God. God wants us to completely follow Him, and because we have sin and error in our lives and those sins lead to death, He sent His Only Begotten Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and to be raised from the grave after three days. When we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and to empower us to “follow” Him completely so we also shall receive an eternal inheritance from Him some day.

Next time we learn how, “the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
