In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land on the other western side of Jordan” which included, “the kings of Jericho, Ai, which is beside Bethel”, and in chapter twelve and verse eleven of Joshua we discover how “Israel” conquered, “the king of Jarmuth” and “the king of Lachish” where we read,
The king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one;
The verse reads, “The king of Jarmuth, one;” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “the king” which means “the royal ruler and leader” “of Jarmuth” or “belonging to Jarmuth whose name means ‘heights’ and was a Canaanitish city in the lowlands of Judah with a king and located between Hebron and Lachish”, “one” which means “a single royal ruler and leader”. Joshua or the writer shared how the royal ruler belonging to “Jarmuth” was among the ones “Israel” defeated and seized their territory.
The verse continues, “the king of Lachish, one;” Joshua or the writer added the words, “the king” which means “the royal ruler and leader” “of Lachish” or “belonging to Lachish whose name means ‘invincible’ and was a city lying south of Jerusalem on the borders of Simeon which belonged to the Amorites until conquered by Joshua and allotted to Judah”, “one” which means “a single royal ruler and leader”. Joshua also included the royal ruler and leader belonging to “Lachish” to be among ones “Israel” defeated and seized their land.
When we think through the words in this verse, we see how the royal rulers of “Jarmuth and Lachish” were also among the leaders and lands which were conquered by “Israel”. One by one God delivered these rulers and their territories over to the people of “Israel”, and He fulfilled His promise to give these lands to them. God has also promised to forgive the sins and grant everlasting life to every person who puts their faith and trust in His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. When we yield to Him, He will keep His promise and give us His Holy Spirit as a down payment assuring us that we shall forever live with Him. (See 1 Corinthians 1:22)
Next time we see how “Israel” conquered, “the king of Eglon” and “the king of Gezer”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
