In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land on the other western side of Jordan” which included, “the kings of Jericho, Ai, which is beside Bethel, Jarmuth, and Lachish, Eglon and Gezer, Debir, and Geder, Hormah, Arad Libnah and Adullam”, and in chapter twelve and verse sixteen of Joshua we discover how “Israel” conquered, “the king of Makkedah” and “the king of Bethel” where we read,
The king of Makkedah, one; the king of Bethel, one;
The verse reads, “The king of Makkedah, one;” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “the king” which means “the royal ruler and leader” “of Makkedah” or “belonging to Makkedah whose name means ‘place of shepherds’ and was the location of a cave in Judah where Joshua captured and executed five Canaanite kings during the conquest; located near Bethhoron and Libnah”, “one” which means “a single royal ruler and leader”. Joshua or the writer shared how the royal ruler and the territory belonging to “Makkedah” was overtaken by “Joshua” and the people of “Israel”.
The verse continues, “the king of Bethel”; one;” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “the king” which means “the royal ruler and leader” “of Bethel” or “belonging to Bethel whose name means ‘house of God’ and was a place in south country of Judah, not far from Beersheba and Ziklag”, “one” which means “a single royal ruler and leader”. Joshua or the writer also shared how the royal ruler and the territory belonging to “Bethel” were conquered by “Joshua” and the people of “Israel”.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn about two more of the royal rulers and regions which were overtaken by “Israel”, "Makkedah and Bethel”. God was giving these areas to the people of “Israel” because He promised them they would receive it. He orchestrated and accomplished all these victories, and to Him should be all the glory and honor. God has also made the way through belief and trust in His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and equipped with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and give us the wisdom when to battle and when to receive that which He has given to us.
Next time we see how “Israel” conquered, “the king of Tappuah” and “the king of Hepher”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
