Hebron was Kirjatharba - Joshua 14:15

In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance. Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed the LORD God of Israel”, and in chapter fourteen and verse fifteen of Joshua we learn how, “the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba” where we read,

And the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba;

which Arba was a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.

The verse reads, “And the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba;” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and the name of Hebron” which means “and the fame, reputation and glory belonging to Hebron whose name means ‘association’ and was a city in south Judah approximately twenty miles south of Jerusalem and approximately twenty miles (30 km) north of Beersheba and near where Abraham built an altar” “before was Kirjatharba” or “in front and prior to this time existed as Kirjatharba whose name means ‘city of Arba’ and was the early name of the city which after the conquest was called 'Hebron'”. Joshua or the writer shared how “Hebron” was formerly known as “Kirjatharba”

The verse continues, “which Arba was a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.” Joshua or the writer added the words, “which Arba” which means “that Arba whose name means ‘four’” “was a great man” or “existed as a proud, haughty, noble and mighty male human being” “among the Anakims” which means “in the midst and middle of the Anakims whose name means ‘long-necked’ and was a tribe of giants, descendants of Anak, which dwelled in southern Canaan”. “And the land” or “and the territory, region, district and countryside” “had rest from war” which means “possessed quiet and tranquility separate and apart from fighting and battle.” Joshua or the writer shared how “Arba” who was a notable and mighty “man” in the midst of the “Anakims”, and the territory experienced calm and tranquility from fighting and battle.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how “Hebron” was known by that name after the people of Israel conquered it, but it was called “Kirjatharba” prior to that time. After this event, the region within the promise land was calm and there was no fighting or battle. Jehovah God was distributing the promise land according to His will through Joshua, and Joshua gave “Hebron”, formerly known as “Kirjatharba”, to “Caleb” as he desired. God set forth His will, and “Joshua and Caleb” were to follow it. Because they did, they were blessed. God offers His plan of salvation to everyone through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grants us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and to empower us to live in a manner that is according to that truth and pleasing to Him so we receive our inheritance with Him in Heaven. (See John 16:13; Acts 1:8; Ephesians 1:11-14; 1 Peter 1:4)

Next time we begin a new chapter and learn how, “this then was the lot of the tribe of the children of Judah by their families”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
