In the book of Joshua,, we learned how, “these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land on the other western side of Jordan” which included, “the kings of Jericho, Ai, which is beside Bethel, Jarmuth, and Lachish, Eglon and Gezer”, and in chapter twelve and verse thirteen of Joshua we discover how “Israel” conquered, “the king of Debir” and ”the king of Geder” where we read,
The king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one;
The verse reads, “The king of Debir, one;” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “the king” which means “the royal ruler and leader” “of Debir” or “belonging to Debir whose name means ‘sanctuary’ and was a town in the mountains of Judah west of Hebron and given to the priests and a city of refuge”, “one” which means “a single royal ruler and leader”. Joshua or the writer shared how the leader of “Debir” and his territory were defeated by “Joshua” and the people of “Israel”.
The verse goes on to say, “the king of Geder, one;” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “the king” which means “the royal ruler and leader” “of Geder” or “belonging to Geder whose name means ‘well’ and was one of the Canaanite towns captured in the Promised Land by Joshua and the Israelites”, “one” which means “a single royal ruler and leader”. Joshua or the writer shared how the royal ruler of “Geder” and his territories were overtaken by “Israel”.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn of another two “kings” and their lands which were conquered by “Joshua” and the army of “Israel”. The leaders of “Debir” and “Geder” as well as their territories were defeated and became part of the “promise” of God to inherit their territories. God was giving these lands to “Israel” because He loves them, and because He loves us as well, when we put our faith and trust in His Son Jesus who died on the cross and rose from the grave after three days, He will provide us with forgiveness of sins, everlasting life and His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and empower us to live according to that truth so that we too may inherit all He desires to give us in this life and in Heaven.
Next time we see how “Israel” conquered, “the king of Hormah” and “the king of Arad”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
