In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the LORD said unto him, you are old and stricken in years, and there remains yet very much land to be possessed” which included among others, “the land of the Giblites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising, from Baalgad under mount Hermon unto the entering into Hamath”, and in chapter thirteen and verse six of Joshua we discover how Jehovah God told “Joshua” the land that remains included, “all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon unto Misrephothmaim” where we read,
All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon unto Misrephothmaim, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only divide you it by lot unto the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded you.
The verse reads, “All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon unto Misrephothmaim, and all the Sidonians,…” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “all the inhabitants” which means “each, every and the whole of the dwellers and abiders” “of the hill country” or “belonging to the mountain or range of hills” “from Lebanon” which means “separate and apart from Lebanon whose name means ‘whiteness’ and a wooded mountain range on the northern border of Israel” “unto Misrephothmaim” or “to Misrephothmaim whose name means ‘’burning of water’ and was a place in northern Palestine near Sidon” “and all the Sidonians” which means “and each, every and the whole of the inhabitants of Sidon whose name means hunting”. Joshua or the writer shared how Jehovah God told “Joshua” that the people who lived within the range of mountains from the location of “Lebanon” to “Misrephothamain” as well as every one of the inhabitants of “Sidon” were areas that remained to be conquered by “Israel”.
The verse continues, “… them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only divide you it by lot unto the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded you.” Joshua or the writer added the words, “them will I drive out” which means “them, the people listed above, shall I, Jehovah God seize, dispossess, disinherit and occupy” “from before the children of Israel” or “separate and apart from the offspring and progeny belonging to Israel whose name means ‘God prevails’ and is the name of the descendants or the nation of the descendants of Jacob”: “only divide you it by lot” which means “solely and alone you, Joshua, lay out, assign and apportion” “unto the Israelites” or “toward the people of Israel whose name means ‘God prevails’ and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob” “for an inheritance” which means “on behalf of a possession, heritage, portion and share”, “as I have commanded you” or “in the same and like manner that I, Jehovah God, have charged and ordered you, Joshua”. Joshua or the writer shared how Jehovah God told “Joshua” that He would dispossess the pagan people listed above in the presence of the offspring of “Israel”, and Joshua was to apportion the allotment of the territory to the people of “Israel” even like Jehovah God instructed “Joshua” to do.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Jehovah God included the people within the range of mountains from “Lebanon” to “Misrephothmain” , the “Sidonians” as the people who He would dispossess from their territories. “Joshua” was to divide and distribute the territories to the people of “Israel” as their portion in the manner God instructed him. Jehovah God was to be involved in not only seizing these lands, but also dividing them among the people of “Israel”. God loves “Israel”, and He loves us. He proved His love to us by sending His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days so when we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and to empower us to live according to that truth so we shall receive all the inheritance He has planned for us according to His Divine purpose and will. (See John 3:16; 16:13; Acts 1:8; 1 Peter 1:4)
Next time we see how Jehovah God tells “Joshua” ”divide this land for an inheritance unto the nine tribes”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
