The Country Joshua and Israel Smote - Joshua 12:7

In the book of Joshua, we learned concerning the territory on the east side of the Jordan River, “Moses the servant of the LORD gave it for a possession unto the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh”, and in chapter twelve and verse seven of Joshua we discover how “these are the kings of the country which Joshua and the children of Israel smote on this side Jordan” where we read,

And these are the kings of the country which Joshua and the children of Israel smote on this side Jordan on the west, from Baalgad in the valley of Lebanon even unto the mount Halak, that goes up to Seir; which Joshua gave unto the tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions;

The verse reads, “And these are the kings of the country which Joshua and the children of Israel smote on this side Jordan on the west, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and these are the kings” which means “and the following exist as the royal rulers and leaders” “of the country” or “belonging to the territory, region, district and land” “which Joshua” which means “that Joshua whose name means Jehovah is salvation” “and the children of Israel” or “and the offspring and progeny belonging to Israel whose name means ‘God prevails’ and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob” “smote on this side Jordan” which means “struck, hit, beat and killed upon this side, the following side, Jordan whose name means ‘descender’ and was the river of Palestine running from the roots of Anti-Lebanon to the Dead Sea a distance of approximately 200 miles (320 km)” “on the west” or “in the western location”. Joshua or the writer shared how the following are a list of the royal rulers belonging to the territories that “Joshua” and the offspring of “Israel” conquered on the western side of the river “Jordan”

The verse continues, “… from Baalgad in the valley of Lebanon even unto the mount Halak, that goes up to Seir; which Joshua gave unto the tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions;” Joshua or the writer added the words, “from Baalgad” which means “apart from Baaldad whose name means ‘lord of fortune’ and was a city noted for Baal-worship, located at the most northern or northwestern point to which Joshua's victories extended” “in the valley” or “within the low country or lowlands” “of Lebanon” which means “belonging to Lebanon whose name means ‘whiteness’ and was a wooded mountain range on the northern border of Israel” “even unto the mount Halak” or “also and indeed to the rising above the plain known as Halak whose name means ‘smooth’ and was a mountain in southern Judah which is the southern limit of Joshua's conquest; site unknown”, “that goes up to Seir” which means “that rises and ascends toward Seir whose name means ‘harry or shaggy’ and was a mountain range in Edom extending from the Dead Sea to the Elanitic Gulf”: “which Joshua gave” or “that Joshua whose name means Jehovah is salvation, granted, bestowed and assigned” “unto the tribes of Israel” which means “to the groups or clans belonging to Israel whose name means ‘God prevails’ and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob” “for a possession” or “on behalf of a conquest, heritage or inheritance” “according to their divisions” which means “in keeping with their, the offspring of Israel’s, courses, share, class, allotment and part”. Joshua or the writer shared how the following territories which extended from “mount Halak” that ascends to “Seir” were to be divided as an inheritance among the remaining tribes of Israel.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how the time had come to divide up the territories within the conquered promise land. “Joshua” would give each “tribe” of the children of “Israel” their particular allotment, and we shall see what those were in our next few verses. Jehovah God will give an inheritance to those who yield their lives to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and lead us to the day when we stand before Him to be judged and to inherit that which He has planned for us for all eternity. (See 2 Corinthians 5:10)

Next time we discover, “more of the names of the kings”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
