In the book of Joshua, we learned how Jehovah God said, “This is the inheritance of the children of Gad after their families, the cities, and their villages, and Moses gave inheritance unto the half tribe of Manasseh: and this was the possession of the half tribe of the children of Manasseh by their families”, and in chapter thirteen and verse thirty of Joshua we learn how, “their coast was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan” where we read,
And their coast was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan,
and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, threescore cities:
The verse reads, “And their coast was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and their coast” which means “and their, the half tribe of Manasseh’s, border, inclosed territory or region” “was from Mahanaim” or “existed from Mahanaim whose name means ‘two camps’ and was a place east of the Jordan, named from Jacob's encounter with angels”, “all Bashan” which means “each, every and the whole portion of Bashan whose name means ‘fruitful’ and was a district east of the Jordan known for its fertility which was given to the half-tribe of Manasseh”, “all the kingdom of Og” or “each, every and the whole portion of the royal reign and dominion belonging to Og whose name means ‘long-necked’ and was the Amorite king of Bashan and one of the last representatives of the giants of Rephaim” “king of Bashan” which means “the royal ruler and leader belonging to Bashan whose name means ‘fruitful’ and was “was a district east of the Jordan known for its fertility which was given to the half-tribe of Manasseh”. Joshua or the writer shared how the “half-tribe of Manasseh’s” territory extended from “Mahanaim”, every portion of “Bashan” and every part of the dominion that belonged to “Og” who was the royal ruler of “Bashan”.
The verse continues, “… and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, threescore cities:” Joshua or the writer added the words, “and all the towns of Jair” which means “and each, every and the whole living places, encampments and towns belonging to Jair whose name means ‘he enlightens’ and was a descendant of Manasseh who conquered many towns during the time of the conquests”, “which are in Bashan” or “that exist within Bashan whose name means ‘fruitful’ and was “a district east of the Jordan known for its fertility which was given to the half-tribe of Manasseh”, “threescore cities” which means “sixty dwelling places or towns”. Joshua or the writer shared how every one of the sixty encampments and towns which belonged to “Jair” that were located within “Bashan” were given to the “half-tribe of Manasseh” by Jehovah God through Moses.
When we consider the words in this verse, we discover the territory that was inherited by the “half-tribe of Manasseh” on the eastern side of the “Jordan River”. The edge of their inheritance was from “Mahanaim”, every portion of “Bashan”, every part of the dominion belonging to “Og” who ruled in “Bashan” and every village and encampment within “Jair" which were sixty in number”. This large tract of land was meant to be an ample supply for the “half-tribe of Manasseh” to dwell within and care for their families. God gave them this land through “Moses”, and because everything in the world is His, (See Psalm 24:1) He can distribute it as He wills. God loves people, and since He created all of us and desires to live with us forever, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind which separate us from a personal relationship with Him. When Jesus rose from the grave after three days, He made the way through faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord” to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and provided with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and help us live according to that truth so our lives are pleasing to Him and we receive the inheritance that He desires for us for all eternity. (See John 3:16; 16:10; Acts 1:8; Colossians 1:12)
Next time we learn about, “half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
