The Inheritance of Gad - Joshua 13:28

In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “Moses gave inheritance unto the tribe of Gad, even unto the children of Gad according to their families. And their coast was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the children of Ammon, unto Aroer that is before Rabbah. And from Heshbon unto Ramathmizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim unto the border of Debir, and from Heshbon unto Ramathmizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim unto the border of Debir. And in the valley, Betharam, and Bethnimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, Jordan and his border, even unto the edge of the sea of Chinnereth on the other side Jordan eastward”, and in chapter thirteen and verse twenty-eight of Joshua we learn how, “this is the inheritance of the children of Gad” where we read,

This is the inheritance of the children of Gad after their families, the cities, and their villages.

The verse reads, “This is the inheritance of the children of Gad after their families, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “this is the inheritance” which means “this, the above mentioned territory, exists as the possession, property, heritage, allotment, portion and share” “of the children” or “pertaining to the offspring and progeny” “of Gad” which means “belonging to Gad whose name means ‘troop’ and was the seventh son of Jacob by Zilpah, Leah's handmaid, and full brother of Asher” “after their families” or “according to their, the tribe of Gad’s, clan and kinsmen”. Joshua or the writer shared how “Moses” designated the allotment mentioned above to the offspring belonging to “Gad” according to their clan.

The verse continues, “… the cities, and their villages.” Joshua or the writer added the words, “the cities” which means “the places of waking or towns”, “and their villages” or “and their, the people of Gad’s, enclosures, settled abodes and courts”. Joshua or the writer shared how the “tribe of Gad” and “their families” inherited the towns and settlements located within the above mentioned regions.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how the territories mention in our previous verses were allotted to the “tribe of Gad” along with their family members. God provided for this “tribe” of “Israel” even as He said He would, and He will provide for us as well when we surrender our lives to His Son Jesus who came into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. When we yield to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and equip us with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and give us the ability to live in a manner that is pleasing to Him and is destined to receive an eternal inheritance from Him. (See John 16:13; Acts 1:8; Colossians 1:12)

Next time we learn how, “Moses gave inheritance unto the half tribe of Manasseh”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
