In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land on the other western side of Jordan” which included, “the kings of Jericho, Ai, which is beside Bethel, Jarmuth, and Lachish, Eglon and Gezer, Debir, and Geder, Hormah, Arad, Libnah, Adullam, Makkedah, Bethel, Aphek and Lasharon, Aphek, Lasharon, Madon, Hazor, Shimronmeron, Achshaph, Taanach, Megiddo, Kedesh and Jokneam of Carmel, Dor and the nations of Gilgal”, and in chapter twelve and verse twenty-four of Joshua we discover how “Israel” conquered, “the king of Tirzah” and “all the kings thirty and one” where we read,
The king of Tirzah, one: all the kings thirty and one.
The verse reads, “the king of Tirzah, one:” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “the king” which means “the royal ruler and leader” “of Tirzah” or “belonging to Tirzah whose name means ‘favorable’ and was one of the kingdoms on the west of the Jordan conquered by Joshua and the Israelites”, “one” which means “a single royal ruler and leader”. Joshua or the writer shared how the royal ruler and the territory belonging to “Tirzah” was also among the locations that “Joshua” and the people of “Israel” conquered.
The verse continues, “all the kings thirty and one.” Joshua or the writer added the words, “all the kings” which means “each, every and the whole number of the royal rulers and leaders” “thirty and one” or “thirty-one kings”. Joshua or the writer said there were “thirty-one” royal rulers and their territories who were defeated by “Joshua” and the people of “Israel”.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn about one more royal ruler and his territory that was overtaken by “Joshua” and the people of “Israel”. “Tirzah” was the final region defeated along with the other “thirty” royal leaders who were triumphed over within the promise land. God was keeping His promise to “Israel”, and their next step was to occupy the locations provided for them. God loves “Israel”, and He loves us. He provided His Only Begotten Son Jesus to the world who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. When we surrender our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and empower us to live according to that truth so we too may receive all the blessings that He has for us.
Next time we begin a new chapter see how “Joshua was old and stricken in years”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
