In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the LORD said unto him, you are old and stricken in years, and there remains yet very much land to be possessed. This is the land that yet remains: all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri, from Sihor, which is before Egypt, even unto the borders of Ekron northward, which is counted to the Canaanite: five lords of the Philistines; the Gazathites, and the Ashdothites, the Eshkalonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avites. from the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that is beside the Sidonians, unto Aphek, to the borders of the Amorites”, and in chapter thirteen and verse five of Joshua we discover how Jehovah God told “Joshua” the land remains is also, “the land of the Giblites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising” where we read,
And the land of the Giblites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising,
from Baalgad under mount Hermon unto the entering into Hamath.
The verse reads, “And the land of the Giblites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and the land” which means “and the district, region, country and territory” “of the Giblites” or “belonging to the Giblites whose name means a boundary and were the inhabitants of Gebal, “and all Lebanon” which means “and each, every ant the whole portion belonging to Lebanon whose name means ‘whiteness’ and was a wooded mountain range on the norther border of Israel”, “toward the sunrising” or “to the early morning or dawn”. Joshua or the writer shared how Jehovah God told “Joshua” the territory belonging to the “Giblites” and every portion belonging to “Lebanon” in the direction of the sunrise were among the regions that were yet to be defeated and possessed by the people of “Israel”.
The verse goes on to say, “… from Baalgad under mount Hermon unto the entering into Hamath.” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “from Baalgad” which means “separate and apart from Baalgad whose name means ‘lord of fortune’ and was a city noted for Baal-worship, located at the most northern or northwestern point to which Joshua's victories extended” “under mount Hermon” or “beneath the rising above the plain known as Hermon whose name means ‘a sanctuary’ and was a mountain on the northeastern border of Palestine and Lebanon and overlooking the border city of Dan” “unto the entering into Hamath” which means “to the coming in and lighting upon the city of Hamath whose name means ‘fortress’ and was the principle city of upper Syria in the valley of the Orontes”. Joshua or the writer shared how the territory from “Baalgad” which was beneath “mount Hermon” to the coming in to “Hamath” were also among the territories which were yet to be possessed by “Israel”.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Jehovah God also included the territories belonging to the “Gibites”, every part of “Lebanon” which is located toward the dawn of the morning and “Baalgad” which was beneath “mount Hermon” to the coming in of “Hamath” were also included in the regions that were not yet possessed by the people of “Israel”. God wanted “Israel” to have all these territories, and when they obeyed Him, they would gain these “lands”. God wants us to obey Him as well, and He gave us the way of salvation from our sins through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth and to empower us to live in keeping with that truth so we too may inherit all God has for us in this life and the next. (See John 3:16; John 16:13; Ephesians 1:18)
Next time we learn how Jehovah God tells “Joshua” the land that remains includes, “all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon unto Misrephothmaim”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
