In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded. Joshua smote them from Kadeshbarnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon. And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel”, and in chapter ten and verse forty-three of the book of Joshua, we learn how, “Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal” where we read,
And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.
The verse reads, “And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him,…” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and Joshua returned” which means “and Joshua whose name means Jehovah is salvation turned and went back”, “and all Israel” or “and each, every and the whole of Israel whose name means God prevails and is the proper name for the One True God” “with him” which means “alongside and accompanying him, Joshua”. Joshua or the writer shared how “Joshua” went back to the following place with everyone of the people of “Israel” alongside of him.
The verse continues, “… unto the camp to Gilgal.” Joshua or the writer added the words, “unto the camp” which means “to the encampment” “to Gilgal” or “toward Gilgal whose name means ‘a wheel or rolling’ and was the first site of an Israelite camp west of the Jordan, east of Jericho, here Samuel was judge, and Saul was made king; later used for illicit worship”. Joshua or the writer shared how “Joshua” and everyone within “Israel” went back to the encampment they originally set up in “Gilgal”.
When we consider the words in this verse, we discover how “Josaha” and the people of “Israel” went back to their first encampment within the promise land. Pagan kings and their territories were seized by “Josaha” and the people of “Israel”, and now it was time for them to go back to their original location. God would continue to use them to conquer more kings and lands, but for now, they were regrouping. God loves the people of Israel, and He loves us as well. He proved His love toward us when He sent His Only Begotten Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when He raised Him from the dead after three days, when we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and equip us with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and empower us to live in a manner that is guided by Him whether in times of regrouping or going to battle on behalf of the Kingdom of God.
Next time we begin a new chapter and learn what happened when, “Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
