When Jabin King of Hazor Heard - Joshua 11:1

In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded. Joshua smote them from Kadeshbarnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon. And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel. And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal”, and in chapter eleven and verse one of the book of Joshua, we learn what happened when, “Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things” where we read,

And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,

The verse reads, “And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things,…” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and it came to pass” which means “and the following happened and occurred”, “when Jabin” or “at the time and moment Jabin whose name means ‘whom God observes’ and was a king of Hazor who organized a confederacy of the northern princes against Joshua; confederacy routed by the waters of Merom” “king of Hazor” which means “the royal ruler and leader belonging to Hazor whose name means ‘castle’ and was a king of Hazor who organized a confederacy of the northern princes against Joshua; confederacy routed by the waters of Merom” “had heard those things” or “were given the faculty of hearing, perceiving and understanding those things, Israel conquering the cities and royal rulers of the hills, south, vale and springs”. Joshua or the writer referred to what happened after “Jabin” the royal ruler of “Hazor” understood how Israel destroyed the cities and royal rulers in the southern area of the promise land.

The verse goes on to say, “… that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “that he sent to Jobab”  which means “that he, Jabin, reached out toward Jobab whose name means ‘a desert’ and was the king of Madon, located in northern Canaan, and one of the kings who opposed Joshua during the conquest and who were routed at Meron” “king of Madom” or “the royal ruler and leader belonging to Madom whose name means ‘strife’ and was one of the principal cities of Canaan who joined Jabin and his confederates in their battle against Joshua at the waters of Merom and were defeated”, “and to the king of Shimron” which means “and toward the royal ruler and leader belonging to Shimron whose name means ‘watch-height’ and was a Canaanite royal city allotted to Zebulun”, “and to the king of Achshaph” or “and toward the royal ruler and leader belonging to Achshaph whose name means ‘I shall be bewitiched’ and was a city in north Canaan at foot of Mt Carmel”. Joshua or the writer shared how “Jabin” sent word to “Jobab, Shimron and the king of Achshaph” who were royal rulers located within the promise land of Canaan.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how the royal ruler “Jabin” understood the destruction that was being caused by the people of Israel, and he was motivated to reach out to other royal rulers, “Jobab, Shimron and the king of Achshaph” who were located near him within the promise land. “Jabin” perceived the power and might of Israel, and it appears he felt inadequate to war against them on his own. We also are unable to defeat our foe, sin, on our own, and for this reason God sent His Only Begotten Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and cleanse us from all unrighteousness regardless of who rises up against us.

Next time we learn how “Jabin” also sent to, “the kings that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
