In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the LORD said unto him, you are old and stricken in years, and there remains yet very much land to be possessed”, and in chapter thirteen and verse two of the book of Joshua we discover how Jehovah God told “Joshua”, “this is the land that yet remains” where we read,
This is the land that yet remains: all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri,
The verse reads, “This is the land that yet remains:” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “this is the land” which means “the following exists the territory, region, district and county” “that yet remains” or “that is the remnant, still left over and continues”. Joshua or the writer shared how Jehovah God told “Joshua” that the following territory continued to be in existence and not possessed by “Israel”.
The verse continues, “all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri,” Joshua or the writer added the words, “all the borders” which means “each, every and the whole of the edges, boundaries and circuits” “of the Philistines” or “belonging to the Philistines whose name means ‘immigrants’ and referred to an inhabitant of Philistia; descendants of Mizraim who immigrated from Caphtor (Crete?) to the western seacoast of Canaan”, “and all Geshuri” which means “and each, every and the whole of Geshuri or Geshurites from Geshur whose name means ‘proud beholder’ and was a tribe in south Palestine near to the Philistines”. Joshua or the writer shared how every boundary belonging to the “Philistines” and “Geshuri” were part of the territories that Jehovah God told “Joshua” remained.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Jehovah God recognized the first of the lands which remained to be overtaken by the people of “Israel”. The boundaries of the “Philistines” and every part of “Geshuri” were mentioned by Jehovah God. The idea was that He desired to give “Israel” even more country within the promise land, and the implication to “Joshua” was that He would make a provision for it. God loves the people of “Israel”, and He provides for and protects them. He loves us too, and when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days, He made the way through faith and trust in Him to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and provided with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and empower us to inherit all He has for us in this life and in Heaven with Him. (See John 16:13; Acts 1:8; Ephesians 3:18)
Next time we see how Jehovah God tells “Joshua” the land remains, “from Sihor, which is before Egypt, even unto the borders of Ekron northward”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
