Joshua Old and Stricken in Years - Joshua 13:1

In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land on the other western side of Jordan” which included, “the kings of Jericho, Ai, which is beside Bethel, Jarmuth, and Lachish, Eglon and Gezer, Debir, and Geder, Hormah, Arad, Libnah, Adullam, Makkedah, Bethel, Aphek and Lasharon, Aphek, Lasharon, Madon, Hazor, Shimronmeron, Achshaph, Taanach, Megiddo, Kedesh and Jokneam of Carmel, Dor the nations of Gilgal, Tirzah and all the kings thirty and one”, and in chapter thirteen and verse one of the book of Joshua we discover how “Joshua was old and stricken in years” where we read,

Now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the LORD said unto him, you are old and stricken in years, and there remains yet very much land to be possessed.

The verse reads, “Now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the LORD said unto him, you are old and stricken in years, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “now Joshua” which means “at this time Joshua whose name means Jehovah is salvation” “was old” or “existed as aged and elderly” “and stricken in years” which means “and have entered, attained and been enumerated for many annual sets of days”; “and the LORD” or “and Jehovah whose name means the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “said unto him” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed to him, Joshua”, “you are old” or “you, Joshua, exist as aged and elderly” “and stricken in years” which means “and have entered, attained and been enumerated for many annual sets of days”. Joshua or the writer shared how “Joshua” was not only aged and filled with many annual sets of days, but Jehovah God also verbally acknowledged the same.

The verse goes on to say, “… and there remains yet very much land to be possessed.” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “and there remains yet” which means “and there continues to still exist the following left behind, as a remainder and remnant of” “very much land” or “a great and massive amount of territories, countries and regions” “to be possessed” which means “to seize, dispossess, inherit and occupy”. Joshua or the writer shared how Jehovah God told “Joshua” there continued to be a massive amount of countries, territories and regions to dispossess and occupy.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how “Joshua” grew older and enumerated with “years”, and God acknowledged it. However, there were a great many territories that had not been conquered and “occupied” by “Israel”. In other words, there were more locations that Jehovah God desired to give to the people of “Israel”. God loves “Israel”, and they are provided for and protected by Him. This is because He has a personal relationship with them, and He desires to have a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. When we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and empower us to live according to that truth so we bless and please Him for all eternity.

Next time see how Jehovah God tells “Joshua”, “this is the land that yet remains”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
