Give Me This Mountain - Joshua 14:12

In the book of Joshua, we learned how Caleb said, “Moses swore on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon your feet have trodden shall be your inheritance, and your children's for ever, because you have wholly followed the LORD my God. And now, behold, the LORD has kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the LORD spoke this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old. As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in”, and in chapter fourteen and verse twelve of Joshua we learn how Caleb said, “therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spoke in that day” where we read,

Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.

The verse reads, “Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spoke in that day;” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “now therefore give me this mountain” which means “at this time wherefore, then and on this account, grant, bestow and assign to me, Caleb, this particular rising above the plain or range of mountains”, “whereof the LORD spoke” or “in which Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God uttered, declared and proclaimed” “in that day” which means “within that particular time period”. Joshua or the writer shared how “Caleb” requested that “Joshua” grant to him the “mountain” that was promised to him by Jehovah God.

The verse goes on to say, “for you heard in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced:” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “for you heard in that day” which means “because, since and on account that you, Joshua, have been given the faculty for hearing, perceiving and understanding within that particular time period”, “how the Anakims were there” or “that the Anakims whose name means ‘long-necked’ and were a tribe of giants, descendants of Anak, which dwelled in southern Canaan, existed within the mountain”, “and that the cities” which means “and that the dwelling places and towns” “were great and fenced” or “existed as large, intense, massive, enclosed, fortified and inaccessible”. Joshua or the writer shared how “Caleb” told “Joshua” that he understood within that time period that the “Anakims” who were giants existed within the mountain and they had massive and fortified dwelling places in which to live.

Finally the verse says, “ if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.” Joshua or the writer concluded this verse with the words, “if so be the LORD” or “whether and in case that Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “will be with me” which means “shall accompany and exist alongside me, Caleb”, “then I shall be able to drive them out” or “at that time I, Caleb, will have the ability to seize, dispossess, disinherit and impoverish them, the Anakims”,  “as the LORD said” which means “in likeness to the manner that Jehovah who is the existing One and is the name of the One True God, uttered, declared and proclaimed”. Joshua or the writer ended this verse by sharing how “Caleb” told Joshua if Jehovah God accompanied him, he would be able to dispossess and impoverish the “Anakims” like Jehovah God declared.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how “Caleb” told “Joshua” to bestow upon him the “mountain” that Jehovah God promised him, because he knew “Joshua” was aware of the “Anakim giants” who lived in massive and fortified dwelling places there. “Caleb” also told “Joshua” if Jehovah God would accompany him, he would dispossess the “Anakims” like God told him he would. “Caleb” knew God would keep His promise, and although He uses people to fulfill His will at times, what God desires shall be done. This same Almighty God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and He raised Him from the dead three days later, so when we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and give us the ability to take possession of all He desires for our lives.

Next time we learn how, “Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
