Reubenites and Gadites Received Inheritance - Joshua 13:8

In the book of Joshua, we learned how Jehovah God told Joshua, “divide this land for an inheritance unto the nine tribes, and the half tribe of Manasseh, …”, and in chapter thirteen and verse eight of Joshua we discover how Jehovah God said, “the Reubenites and the Gadites have received their inheritance” where we read,

With whom the Reubenites and the Gadites have received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of the LORD gave them;

The verse reads, “With whom the Reubenites and the Gadites have received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “with whom the Reubenites” which means “alongside and accompanying the Reubenites whose name means ‘behold a son’ and were the descendants of Reuben who was the son of Jacob” “and the Gadites” whose name means “an invader: a troop or fortune’ and were one of the tribes who descended from Gad who was a son of Jacob” “have received their inheritance” which means “lay hold of, seized and acquired their, the Reubenites and Gadites’, possession, property, portion, share and heritage”, “which Moses gave them” or “that Moses, whose name means ‘drawn out’ and was the prophet, the lawgiver and the leader of the exodus, granted, bestowed and assigned to them, the Reubenites and the Gadites”. Joshua or the writer shared how Jehovah God included the territories which were already distributed to the tribes of “Reuben” and “Gad” as well as the other one-half tribe of “Manasseh”.

The verse continues, “… beyond Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of the LORD gave them;” Joshua or the writer added the words, “beyond Jordan eastward” which means “across and on the other side of Jordan whose name means descender and was the river of Palestine running from the roots of Anti-Lebanon to the Dead Sea a distance of approximately 200 miles (320 km) and in an eastern direction”, “even as Moses” or “indeed and also like and in the manner that Moses whose name means ‘drawn out’ and was the prophet, the lawgiver and the leader of the exodus,” “the servant of the LORD” which means “the slave, bondman or man of servile condition” “gave them” or “granted, bestowed and assigned to them, the Reubenites, Gadites and the one-half tribe of Manasseh”. Joshua or the writer shared how Jehovah God referred to the territory which was given to the tribe of “Reuben, Gad and one half of the tribe of Manasseh” which was located on the eastern side of the river “Jordan” even as “Moses”, Jehovah God’s man of servile condition granted to them.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how Jehovah God referred to the land that was allotted to the tribes of “Reuben, Gad and one-half of the tribe of Manasseh” which was located on the eastern side of the “Jordan” river. The remainder of the tribes of “Israel” were to be given regions on the western side of the “Jordan”, and Jehovah God was in charge of the distribution. God loves the people of Israel, and He provided for them. He gave them the promise land and helped to divide it among their clans. God loves us too, and when He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and resurrected Him from the dead after three days, He made the way through faith and trust in Him to be forgiven of ours sins, granted everlasting life and equipped with His Holy Spirit who will not only guide us into all truth, but also empower us to live according to that truth in keeping with His perfect will, plan and inheritance for our lives.

Next time we learn how the inheritance included the land, “from Aroer, that is upon the bank of the river Arnon”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
