Mark wrote, “And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eats with me shall betray me. And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I? And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dips with me in the dish. The Son of man indeed goes, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born. And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body. And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it”, and in chapter fourteen and verse twenty-four of his book, Mark how Jesus, “said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many”, where we read:
And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.
The verse reads, “And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, ...” Mark began with the words, “and he said unto them” which means “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to His disciples”, “This is my blood” or “this cup is Jesus' blood shed” “of the new testament” which means “pertaining to the new disposition, arrangement and covenant”. Mark shared how Jesus declared the “cup” to be His “blood” which signified a “new covenant” with people.
The verse goes on to say, “... which is shed for many.” Mark continued with the words, “which is shed” which means “that is poured out, bestowed and distributed largely” “for many” or “on behalf of a lot and large group of people”. Mark shared how Jesus said the “cup” signified His “blood” which was to be “poured out” for a large group of people.
When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how the “drink” within the “cup” was likened unto Jesus' blood of “sacrifice” for many people, and because He “shed” His “blood” now many may be saved. This began a “New Covenant or Testament” with mankind. Now everyone who puts their faith and trust in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be “saved”, and though they have “sinned” greatly, when they align with Jesus their sins shall be forgiven and wiped away. All who are wise will know and understand the significance of Jesus' “cup” and drink from it willingly as they yield their lives to Him.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus said, “I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
