Mark wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrays me is at hand. And immediately, while he yet spake, came Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely”, and in chapter fourteen and verse forty-five of his book, Mark shared how Judas, “went straightway to” Jesus … “and kissed him”, where we read:
And as soon as he was come, he went straightway to him, and said, Master, master; and kissed him.
The verse reads, “And as soon as he was come, he went straightway to him, ...”. Mark began with the word, “and as soon as he was come” which means “and immediately after Judas appeared and arrived to where Jesus was”, “he went straightway” or “Judas went immediately and forthwith” “to him” which means “to Jesus”. Mark shared how Judas immediately went to Jesus when he came to the place Jesus was located.
The verse continues, “... and said, Master, master; and kissed him.” Mark added the words, “and said” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “Master” or “teacher”, “master” which means “teacher”;“and kissed him” or “and affectionately, tenderly and earnestly kissed Jesus”. Mark shared how Judas acknowledged Jesus twice as His “teacher” and then “kissed” Him “affectionately and tenderly”.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Judas fulfilled his agreement with the “religious leaders” by identifying Jesus with an “affectionate kiss”. As though he was giving reverence to Jesus, he called Him his “teacher” two times before “betraying” Him with the “kiss”. God loves people so much that He allowed the “betrayal” of His Son Jesus with a “treacherous kiss” that appeared to be “affectionate” but was actually deceiving. People who carefully examine what God has allowed and what Jesus did for their salvation should easily recognize how much they desire to have a loving personal relationship with them, and those who are wise will yield their lives to the saving grace of Jesus Christ and receive life with God forevermore.
Next time Mark shares how, “they laid their hands on” Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
