Mark wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he said to his disciples, Sit you here, while I shall pray”, and in chapter fourteen and verse thirty-three of his book, Mark shared how Jesus, “took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy”, where we read:
And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;
The verse reads, “And he took with him Peter and James and John,...” Mark began with the words, “And he took with him “and Jesus carried and brought forth alongside Himself” “Peter” whose name means “a little stone or rock” “and James” which means “supplanter” and was “the son of Zebedee, an apostle and brother of the apostle John and commonly called James the greater or elder who was slain by Herod” “and John” which refers to “John the apostle, the writer of the Fourth Gospel, son of Zebedee and Salome and brother of James the elder whose name means Jehovah is a gracious giver”. Mark shared how Jesus “took” His three disciples, “Peter, James and John”, further into the garden with Him where He would pray.
The verse continues, “and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;” Mark added the words, “and began” which means “and started and initiated” “to be sore amazed” or “being thrown into terror or amazement and astounded”, “and to be very heavy” which means “and greatly troubled, distressed and in anguish”. Mark shared how Jesus “began” to be “astounded” and “greatly troubled” within His spirit.
When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how adversely this time of prayer was for Jesus. He “took” His three disciples, “Peter, James and John”, with Him as He went further into the garden to pray, and the impact of what He was doing distressed Him greatly. Jesus endured great anguish to provide “salvation” for mankind, and because the moment for His “betrayal” was imminent, He was moved in His spirit regarding this time. God loves people, and He made provision for the forgiveness of sins to every person who believes and trusts in His Son Jesus. Those who believe will be saved, and because He went through such distress for them those who trust in Him will never be eternally separated from God.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus, “said unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
