Mark wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives”, and in chapter fourteen and verse twenty-seven of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “all of you shall be offended because of me”, where we read:
And Jesus said unto them, All of you shall be offended because of me this night:
for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.
The verse reads, “And Jesus said unto them, All of you shall be offended because of me this night:” Mark began with the words, “and Jesus said unto them” which means “and the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate uttered, declared and proclaimed to His disciples”, “all of you” or “each, every, the whole and everyone of Jesus' disciples” “shall be offended” which means “will be stumbled, caused to fall away and enticed to sin” “because of me” or “for the reason of what would happen to Jesus” “this night” which refers to “the very night upon which they were on the mount of Olives”. Mark shared how Jesus told His disciples every one of them would be “stumbled” by what happens to Him on that night.
The verse continues, “for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.” Mark added the words, “for it is written” which means “because, since and on account that what will happen to Jesus was delineated or formed in letters upon a tablet, parchment, paper or other material”, “I will smite the shepherd” or “I will cut down, kill and slay the herdsman, overseer and presiding director”, “and the sheep” which means “and the four footed tame animals” “shall be scattered” or “will be dispersed, winnowed and separated”. Mark shared how Jesus referred to Zechariah chapter thirteen and verse seven which says, “Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, says the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones” as He told His disciples what they would do in response to what happens to Him.
When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus revealed what the reaction of His disciples would be to the events that were about to occur. Jesus knew He would be taken captive by the “religious leaders”, and His disciples would all quickly leave Him. God's plan was in full affect, and soon Jesus would be seized by the ruling authorities. Jesus' disciples, who promised they would never leave Him, would run away and leave Him stranded when this happens. God knew these things would take place, and His prophet Zachariah shared about this event, and those who are wise will study each of his prophetic words and yield their lives to God's Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus says, “after that I am risen, I will go before you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
