Mark wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body. And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it. And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many. Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God”, and in chapter fourteen and verse twenty-six of his book, Mark shared “when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives”, where we read:
And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
The verse reads, “And when they had sung an hymn, ...” Mark began with the words, “and when” which means “and after the time and moment” “they had sung an hymn” or “Jesus and His disciples were singing a song of praise such as the paschal hymns which were Psalms 113-118 which the Jews called the great Hallel”. Mark shared how Jesus and His disciples “sang” a “hymn” after eating passover and giving them “communion” which represented His body and blood being “shed”.
The verse goes on to say, “... they went out into the mount of Olives.” Mark continued with the words, “they went out” which means “Jesus and His disciples left and departed” “into the mount of Olives” or “to the nearby mountain where there were olive trees bearing olives”. Mark shared how Jesus and His disciples left the “upper room” and went toward the “mount of Olives”.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus and His disciples concluded their time of eating the “passover meal” which included Jesus' “New Testament” sacrament by “singing a hymn”. Afterward they left to go to the “mount of Olives” where more of Jesus' plan of salvation would unfold. Each of these events aligns with God's desire to save people, and those who are wise shall see each event leading to the time when Jesus would die on the cross for their sins so they may live “forever” with God.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus says, “All of you shall be offended because of me this night”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
