Rejoicing Over the Found Silver Piece - Luke 15:9

The beloved physician Luke wrote concerning Jesus, “Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receives sinners, and eats with them. And he spoke this parable unto them, saying, What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, does not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repents, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, does not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it?”, and in chapter fifteen and verse nine of his book Luke wrote how Jesus said when the woman found her piece of silver, “she calls her friends and her neighbors together” where we read:

And when she has found it, she calls her friends and her neighbors together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost.

The verse reads, “And when she has found it, she calls her friends and her neighbors together, saying, ...” Luke began with the words, “and when” or “and at the time and moment” “she has found it” which means “the woman discovers the lost piece of silver after searching”, “she calls her friends” or “the woman invites, assembles and brings together her associates with familiarity and companions” “and her neighbors” which refers to “the woman's people who have adjoining ground” “together” or “to herself and with one another”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared how Jesus said at the time the woman discovered where the “silver coin” was, she beckoned her “friends and neighbors” to assemble with her as she told them the following words.

The verse goes on to say, “... Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost.” Luke continued with the words, “rejoice with me” or “sympathize and be in gladness alongside the woman who lost her silver piece”; “for I have found the piece” which means “because, since and on account that the woman discovered her silver coin” “which I had lost” or “that the woman misplaced”. Luke shared how Jesus said the woman would tell her “friends and neighbors” to “celebrate” alongside her because she discovered the location of her “lost piece of silver”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn what Jesus said the reaction of the woman was when she found her lost piece of silver. She gathered her “friends and neighbors” together, and told them to “celebrate” with her because she found her lost “coin”. God loves people, and His desire is to have them believe and trust in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”. In other words, people are “lost”, and His desire is to “find” them. When they yield their life to Him, He will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life, and all of Heaven will be gathered together and “rejoice” over their “salvation”.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repents”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
