Luke the beloved physician wrote how the religious leaders took Jesus, “and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off. And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse fifty-six of his book Luke shared how, “a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire … and said, the man was also with him” where we read:
But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said,
This man was also with him.
The verse reads, “But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, ...” Luke began with the words, “but a certain maid beheld him” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover a particular a young girl or damsel looked upon and considered Peter” “as he sat by the fire” which means “while and during the time Peter was seated beside the fire”, “and earnestly looked upon him” or “and intently fixed her eyes and gazed upon Peter”, “and said” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed”. Luke shared how there was a “young girl” who began to look intently at “Peter” while he was “seated” by the “fire” and proclaimed the following words.
The verse goes on to say, “... This man was also with him.” Luke continued with the words, “This man” which means “this particular male human being”” “was also with him” which means “was even so and indeed alongside Jesus”. Luke shared how the “young maiden” declared how “Peter” was even so and indeed alongside Jesus.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we can imagine Peter's reaction as this “young girl” exposed him and his position with Jesus. Though Peter attempted to hide, this “small girl” told everyone around her who he was. No one is able to hide from God, and those who desire to have a personal relationship with God must do so by believing and trusting in His Son Jesus. In other words, God knows where we are, and He is able to expose anyone He desires. Let all who consider these things understand that God want them to believe and trust in His Son Jesus and always to align with Him.
Next time Luke shares how Peter, “denied him, saying , woman, I know him not”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
