Luke the beloved physician wrote how the religious leaders took Jesus, “and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off. And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them. But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse fifty-seven of his book Luke shared how Peter, “denied him, saying , woman, I know him not” where we read:
And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.
The verse reads, “And he denied him, saying, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he denied him” or “and Peter disregarded, abnegated, abjured, rejected and refused to know Jesus”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared how “Peter” “abnegated” that he knew Jesus.
The verse continues, “... Woman, I know him not.” Luke added the word, “woman” which means “female human being”, “I know him not” which means “I, Peter, do not have any knowledge of, regard for or attention toward Jesus”. Luke shared how “Peter” told the “young maiden” that he had no knowledge of Jesus.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we discover how Peter “denied” having any knowledge of Jesus. This was the first time “Peter” denied that he knew the Lord Jesus, and because Jesus told him there would be three times in total, we shall see two more times in the verses ahead. Though people have confidence in themselves, Jesus knows the truth about them. Everyone is in need of a personal relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ, and the only way to receive that relationship is to believe and trust in Him as their “Savior and Lord”. Let all who read these words yield to Jesus and never follow the confidence and denial of Peter.
Next time Luke shares, “after a little while another saw him, and said, you are also of them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
