Luke the beloved physician wrote how, “Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him. But Jesus said unto him, Judas, are you betraying the Son of man with a kiss?”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse forty-nine of his book Luke shared how Jesus' disciples asked, “Lord, shall we smite with the sword?” where we read:
When they which were about him saw what would follow,
they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?
The verse reads, “When they which were about him saw what would follow, ...” Luke began with the words, “when they which were about him” or “at the time and moment the other disciples who were near and around Jesus” “saw what would follow” which means “perceived, discerned and beheld that which would come to pass and happen”, they asked the following words. Luke shared how Jesus' disciples perceived what was happening and asked Him the following question.
The verse continues, “... they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?” Luke added the words, “they said unto him” which means “the other disciples of Jesus uttered, declared, proclaimed and questioned Jesus”, “Lord” which means “One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”, “shall we smite” or “should we, disciples of Jesus, smite and cut down, kill, slay and knock” “with the sword” which means “by using the large knife or small and curved sword which was used for a cutting stroke or thrusting”? Luke shared how the “disciples of Jesus” around this event began to question Him as to whether they should “slay and kill” the arresting crowd with “the sword”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we notice how these “disciples” who surrounded Jesus really did not know how to respond to this event. Jesus was being betrayed by Judas with a kiss, and the multitude who followed Him were there to arrest Jesus and bring Him to trial. We can imagine the perplexity within these disciples as they were probably overwhelmed by what was happening. Jesus allowed these things, regardless of the reaction of His own disciples, because He loves people and desires a relationship with them. Because He endured all these things, when a person begins to understand how Jesus will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life, their best response is to yield their lives to Him in belief and trust and immediately they shall be freed because He was captured.
Next time Luke shares how, “one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
