Luke the beloved physician wrote, “when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer. For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. And he took bread, and gave thanks, and broke it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse twenty of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “this cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you” where we read:
Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
The verse reads, “Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, ...” Luke began with the words, “likewise also” or “in the same manner even so and indeed” “the cup after supper” which means “the drinking vessel when the evening meal was eaten”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared when the “evening meal” was eaten, Jesus took the “cup” and said the following words.
The verse goes on to say, “... This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.” Luke continued with the words, “this cup” or “this drinking vessel” “is the new testament” which means “exists as the recently made, fresh, unused, unworn, unprecedented and unheard of covenant, compact and disposition” “in my blood” or “within my, Jesus' physical blood”, “which is shed for you” which means “that is poured out, bestowed and distributed largely on behalf of Jesus' disciples”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “cup” He presented after the evening meal represented the “new testament or covenant” that was in His “physical blood” which was to be poured out on their behalf.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus presented the second part of the “Blessed Sacrament or Eucharist”. The “cup” with the wine inside represented the “blood” that Jesus would “spill” for the “sins” of all mankind, and because He was soon to endure the beating that would cause Him to bleed, He instituted this “sacrament” to remember it by. God loves people, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to pay the price of every persons' sins. Those who believe and trust in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven for their sins and receive everlasting life with God.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “the hand of him that betrays me is with me on the table”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
