Luke the beloved physician wrote, “when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer. For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. And he took bread, and gave thanks, and broke it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse twenty-one of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “the hand of him that betrays me is with me on the table” where we read:
But, behold, the hand of him that betrays me is with me on the table.
The verse reads, “But, behold, the hand of him that betrays me ...” Luke began with the words, “but, behold” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover look, lo and consider”, “the hand of him” which means “the physical hand belonging to the male person” “that betrays me” or “who delivers me, Jesus up treacherously” is according to the following words. Luke shared how Jesus said the physical “hand” of the person who would “betray” Him was as follows.
The verse continues, “... is with me on the table.” Luke added the words, “is with me” or “exists alongside of me, Jesus” “on the table” which means “upon the eating place”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “physical hand” of the person who was going to “betray” Him was actually on the “table” where they were reclining.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus knew who would “betray” Him. In just a short time, Judas would deliver Jesus over to the religious leaders. Judas' physical “hand” was upon the table where Jesus and His disciples were eating, and Jesus could have easily stopped the plan Judas had in mind. Jesus endured these things because He desired to “save” people from their sins so they could live forever with God. Those who examine with great thought everything Jesus did for them should yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “truly the Son of man goes, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
