In Psalms chapter fifty five David wrote, “it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him. But it was you, a man my equal, my guide, and my acquaintance. We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company”, and in chapter fifty-five and verse fifteen of Psalms David said, “let death seize upon them”, where we read,
Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell:
for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.
The verse begins, “Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell:” David began with the words, “let death” or “allow and permit desolation and destruction” “seize upon them” which means “take hold and capture the people who reproached David”, “and let them go down” or “and allow and permit the people who reproached David to descend, decline and sink” “quick into hell” which means “lively, active, flowing and fresh into the underworld, the grave, the pit and the place of no return”. David desired that “death” and the “grave” actively capture his enemies.
The verse continues, “for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.” David added the words, “for wickedness” or “because, since and on account that affliction, adversity, ill favor, bad, trouble and noisome grievousness” “is in their dwellings” which means “exists within the enemies' houses, abodes and habitations”, “and among them” or “and in the midsts, inner part and middle the enemies of David”. David shared the reason he wanted “death” and “hell” to come quickly upon his enemies was because “evil, adversity, trouble and grievousness” was within their homes and in the middle of all of them.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how David wanted his hating foes to “die” and be sent to the underworld. He knew evil, affliction and adversity was among them and in their homes. They were surrounded by “wicked ways”, and they influenced others with their immoral acts and deeds. God sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of everyone, and without believing and trusting in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, we are actually among those who influence others toward evil. Jesus will forgive us when we yield to Him, and He will grant us everlasting life that will keep us from eternal death and hell forever and ever.
Next time David says, “I will call upon God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
