In Psalms chapter fifty one David told God, “open you my lips; and my mouth shall show forth your praise”, and in chapter fifty-one and verse sixteen of Psalms David told God, “you desire not sacrifice”, where we read,
For you desire not sacrifice; else would I give it: you delight not in burnt offering.
The verse begins, “For you desire not sacrifice; else would I give it:” David began with the words, “For you desire not sacrifice” or “because, since and on account that you, Lord Jehovah God, do not delight, take pleasure in or favor offering”; “else would I give it” which means “lest I, David, would bestow, grant, devote and consecrate offering”. David acknowledged to the Lord Jehovah God that He did not delight or take pleasure in offering or he would have provided and produced it.
The verse goes on to say, “you delight not in burnt offering.” David continued with the words, “you delight not” or “you, Lord Jehovah God, do not accept favorably or take pleasure” “in burnt offering” which means “in whole sacrifices which go up in smoke and are burned”. David told Jehovah God that He did not accept favorably the sacrifice which is burned.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see how David acknowledged before Jehovah God His lack of favor toward “sacrifice” and “burnt offering”. The idea is that the religious activity was not what God wanted for His believers. We will see what God is looking for in our next verse, but for now, let us be reminded that “religious activity” alone does not satisfy Jehovah God, and only belief and trust in His Son Jesus is an acceptable “sacrifice” and “offering” to Him. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified for the sins of all mankind, and anyone who yields themselves to Him will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life. Every other religious activity will not be accepted as a provision for “sin”, and we are wise when we not only understand this, but also respond by surrendering to Him as our “Savior and Lord”.
Next time David says, “the sacrifices of God are a broken spirit”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
