In Psalms chapter fifty two David asked, “Why boast you yourself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endures continually”, and in chapter fifty-two and verse two of Psalms David said, “your tongue devises mischiefs”, where we read,
Your tongue devises mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.
The verse begins, “Your tongue devises mischiefs;” David began with the words, “your tongue” or “your, Doeg's, wedge in his mouth used for speaking” “devises mischiefs” which means “plans, calculates, invents and imagines engulfing ruin, destruction and calamity”. David said “Doeg's” “tongue” invents and imagines engulfing ruin and destruction.
The verse continues, “like a sharp razor, working deceitfully .” David added the words, “like a sharp razor” or “similar and in likeness to a whetted or sharpened knife, scabbard or sheath of a sword”, “working deceitfully” which means “fashioning, accomplishing, making and producing laxness, slackness, remissness and treachery”. David said “Doeg” used his “tongue” like a sharpened sword that produces slackness and treachery.
When we think through the words in this verse, we see how David identified “Doeg's” sharp “tongue” as his weapon. James said, “the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindles!”, (See James 3:5) and he added, “And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed of mankind: But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.” (See James 3:6-10) God desires that we use our “tongues” to magnify Him and bless others, and when we “confess our sins” and receive His Son Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us through His Holy Spirit how to glorify, magnify and honor Him and other people. Let us note David's words to “Doeg” and yield ourselves to Jesus so we will never use our “tongues” in a similar manner as he.
Next time David says, “you love evil more than good”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
