In Psalms chapter fifty one David said to God, “Against you, you only, have I sinned, and done this evil in your sight: that you might be justified when you speak, and be clear when you judge”, and in chapter fifty-one and verse five of Psalms David said, “Behold, I was shaped in iniquity”, where we read,
Behold, I was shaped in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
The verse begins, “Behold, I was shaped in iniquity;” David began with the words, “Behold, I was shaped” or “lo, look and consider, I, David, was brought forth and born” “in iniquity” which means “with perversity, depravity, guilt and deserving of punishment”. David appealed to Jehovah God to consider that he was born with depravity and perversity within his life.
The verse continues, “and in sin did my mother conceive me.” David added the words, “and in sin” or “and within error, wrong, mistake and missing the mark” “did my mother” which means “did my, David's, immediate female progenitor and ancestor” “conceive me” or “gestate me, David”. David said in error, wrong, mistake and missing of the mark did his immediate female progenitor gestate him.
When we think through the words in this verse, we may find it difficult to understand why David would have considered himself “shaped in iniquity” and gestated by his “mother” in error and wrong. Paul the apostle helps us understand, “as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned”, (See Romans 5:12) which tells us that every person receives the “sin nature” from their parents. This however is not the end of all things because Paul went on to add, “But not as the offense, so also is the free gift. For if through the offense of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, has abounded unto many”. (See Romans 5:15) God sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified for the sins of every person, and because all are guilty of iniquity and sin which separates people from God, they needed a “Savior” to rescue them from their separation. God loves us and desires to pour out His grace upon every person who believes and trusts in His Son Jesus, and when we do, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and make us as though we had no “sin nature” to contend with even though we are guilty.
Next time David tells God, “you desire truth in the inward parts”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
