In Psalms chapter fifty five David wrote, “I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest. Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city. Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it”, and in chapter fifty-five and verse eleven of Psalms David said, “Wickedness is in the midst thereof”, where we read,
Wickedness is in the midst thereof: deceit and guile depart not from her streets.
The verse begins, “Wickedness is in the midst thereof:” David began with the word, “Wickedness” or “engulfing ruin, destruction and calamity” “is in the midst thereof” which means “is with the middle of the city”. David said ruin and destruction was within the middle of the city which was surrounded by his hating foes.
The verse continues, “deceit and guile depart not from her streets.” David added the words, “deceit and guile” or “injury, oppression, fraud and treachery, falsehood and subtlety” “depart not from her streets” which means “do not cease, withdraw or go back from her, the city's, open place, plaza or avenues”. David said injury, oppression, fraud, treachery and falsehood do not withdraw from the roadways and plazas of the city.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see through David how evil the city became because of his hating adversaries. Not only did his “enemies” surround the city, but they brought their pernicious and evil ways within it as well. People who refuse to have a personal relationship with God follow their own paths and ways, and when those ways are evil, they bring injury, oppression and falsehood to everyone they are around. God wants people to turn from their sinful and selfish ways and believe upon His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of the world. Jesus came to change the actions, attitudes, speeches and deeds of people, and when they yield to Him, He will forgive their sins, grant them everlasting life and teach them how to leave all injury and oppression behind. May we give praise and honor to Jehovah God and His Son Jesus for their provision to be kept from the injurious ways of the wicked and to follow and obey His way of living in this world.
Next time David says, “it was not an enemy that reproached me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
