In Psalms chapter fifty five David wrote, “I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest”, and in chapter fifty-five and verse nine of Psalms David said, “Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues”, where we read,
Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city.
The verse begins, “Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues:” David began with the words, “Destroy, O Lord” or “swallow up, engulf and eat up, O Adonay or reverent master”, “and divide their tongues” which means “and split and cleave the wedges in the mouths used for speaking of David's hating foes and adversaries”. David appealed to Jehovah God his reverent master to split and divide the “tongues” in the mouths of his “enemies”.
The verse continues, “ for I have seen violence and strife in the city.” David added the words, “for I have seen violence” or “because, since and on account that I, David, have observed, beheld and looked at wrong, cruelty and injustice” “and strife” which means “and controversy, dispute and quarrel” “in the city” or “within the guarded town”. David said he observed cruelty and wrong within the guarded town.
When we meditate upon words in this verse, we see how David wanted Jehovah God to be involved in bringing retribution to his hating foes. David wanted God to “split” their “tongues” because of the cruelty and wrong they brought into his dwelling place. The idea is that God would frustrate their plans, and David knew God could confuse them. God loves people, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die for their sins so they could be forgiven and live with Him forever. However, if they refuse and reject Him as their “Savior and Lord”, they in effect cause wrong and cruelty within the world, and He will bring judgment on them for it. Let us surrender to Jesus and call upon Him to confuse the “tongues” of our enemies as He becomes our protection and defense against those who rise up against us.
Next time David says, “Day and night they go about it upon the walls”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
